Native to China, Bigarade is a citrus tree (bitter orange tree) that spread in the Mediterranean climate.

Also known as the bitter orange, this tree is one of the four most cultivated citrus fruits in the world. Theophrastus, the father of botany, praised its many properties as early as the 4th century BC, before the tree was imported to Western Europe by Alexander's soldiers. The tree is said to have been brought to Spain by the Arabs in the 9th century. It is cultivated in many countries, including China, as well as India and Paraguay. Its main use is in perfumery, especially cologne.
