Native to China, the name mandarin comes from the tradition of Chinese people receiving this fruit as a gift. In China, the peel of the mandarin was used to treat stomach ailments. Mandarin trees were introduced to Europe much later, first imported by the British in 1815. It was not cultivated in other parts of Southern Europe or Algeria until the mid-19th century. Today, mandarins are mainly grown in China (more than 50% of the world's production), Spain, the United States and the Maghreb countries. Mandarin essential oil is generally said to have relaxing and anti-stress properties.
