［ Characteristics of the plant ］
As lavender matures, the branches become woody and the evergreen, linear leaves turn gray-green to silver-gray. The flowers range from very pale mauve to deep violet-blue and bloom on cylindrical spikes. Lavender has been known to have medicinal and relaxing properties since ancient times, and its soft, slightly sweet, floral, fresh, penetrating and familiar scent has been used since ancient times. Persians, Greeks and Romans burned lavender branches in the rooms of sick people and during epidemics to protect against "bad odors". The Romans also used lavender to scent their baths.
