Yellow-green flowers grow in groups in the leaf axils, and when ripe, they produce green to black spherical fruits. Laurel is cultivated in the Mediterranean coast, France, Corsica, Morocco, and the Middle East, and Turkey is the world's largest exporter. Laurel was also given to Apollo, the god of the sun, art, beauty, and healing, and his son Asculapius, the god of medicine, as well as to the victorious warriors of ancient Greece. In the Middle Ages, laurel was also given to students who passed exams. The word "baccalaureate" (a national exam that certifies the completion of high school education in France) is also derived from "bacca lauri", which means laurel fruit.
